The film is based on a true story about a communist reconnaissance squad soldier named Yang Zirong who posed as a bandit to join a local gang of bandits in 1946 during the Chinese Civil War, eventually assisting the main communist force in destroying the bandits. Qu Bo's novel "Tracks in the Snowy Forest" inspired this film.
