In 1925, Fred C. Dobbs and Bob Curtin are both out of work and living in Tampico, Mexico. They meet an old prospector named Howard and decide to go with him into the wilds of central Mexico to look for gold. They have to go through a lot of trouble to find gold, but in the end they do. However, bandits, the weather, and especially greed threaten to ruin their success.
