Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai around the turn of the nineteenth century, has a rough existence. Having lost his wife and having a low salary, Seibei is unable to provide for his two daughters and his ailing mother. When the lovely Tomoe, a childhood acquaintance, returns into his and his daughters' lives, it appears that new possibilities have opened up. However, as the Japanese feudal order begins to crumble, Seibei is still bound by the code of honor of the samurai and by his own sense of social precedence. In order to do what is best for those he loves, he must figure out a way to make it work.
