Damien O'Donovan, a young doctor from Ireland in the 1920s, is about to leave for a new job in a London hospital. British Black and Tans arrive as he says his goodbyes at a friend's farm, and a young man is killed. Damien joins his brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army, but political events soon separate the brothers.
