In 'Tot altijd,' a true story is told about a group of friends in the 1980s who spend their days enjoying their youth and tumultuous (love) lives. Years later, Thomas, a recent medical school graduate and Mario's closest buddy, finds himself in a pickle when he discovers that Mario has multiple sclerosis (Multiple Sclerosis). Though not a life-threatening illness, it gradually robs the patient of his or her body functions and, in some cases, their mental faculties as well. Mario rises to the top of the ranks of the action organization "Waardig Sterven" ("Dignified Death"), which advocates for the legalization of euthanasia in Belgium. Despite the fact that Thomas is doing everything in his ability to keep his best buddy from losing his life, he cannot take the sight of his friend's ongoing degradation.
