In1831, Charles Adare, an Irishman, travels to Australia with the support of his cousin, who has recently been appointed governor, to start a new life. When he arrives, he meets Sam Flusky, a powerful landowner and ex-convict, who wants to do business with him. Charles encounters Flusky's wife Henrietta, whom he knew as a youngster in Ireland, while attending a dinner party at Flusky's residence. Henrietta is an alcoholic on the point of losing her mind.
