Jussi Vares discovers two bodies on the outskirts of Turku, one of a woman who was shot in the head and the other of a man whose body is covered in runes similar to the cuts, implying that the murder was part of a dark ritual. Vares is hired to look into these homicides a year later. Varesta is led by cable wires to Turku's underworld's dominant invisible godfather, the sheriff. Sheriff is the man about whom no one knows and about whom we don't talk. Vares comes perilously close to the "jury," the secret underworld lord clubs, where members of the human spirit are a cheap commodity. Vares gets too close to the truth while investigating the case.
