During the early nineteenth century, the Earnshaws are a family of Yorkshire farmers. Mr. Earnshaw returns from a trip to the city with a ragged little child named Heathcliff, whom he introduces to the rest of the family. In spite of Earnshaw's disapproval of the youngster, Heathcliff becomes a companion and soulmate for Hindley's sister, Catherine (Hindley's brother). Because of their mother's passing, Cathy and Heathcliff grow up wild and free on the Moors, and despite the ongoing animosity between Hindley and Heathcliff, they are content— that is, until Cathy meets Edgar Linton, the son of a wealthy neighbor.
