Admiral Frank Beardsley returns to New London to lead the Coast Guard Academy, his final visit before being promoted to the position of Chief of the Guard. He is a widower with eight children, and he is the captain of a loving but strict ship, complete with charts and salutes. The children want for a permanent residence. Helen North is a free spirit and a designer whose ten children live in joyful anarchy with group embraces every now and then. Helen and Frank, high school sweethearts, reunite during a reunion and fall in love again. They marry right away. The issues begin when two groups of children, the free spirits and the regimented preppies, are forced to live together. To end the marriage, the feuding factions agree to work together.
