Based on the film of the same name, Blue Thunder is a 1984 ABC television series about the Blue Thunder chopper. Stock footage and an Aérospatiale Gazelle helicopter conversion were used extensively in the production of this show. In the television series, a ground unit called "Rolling Thunder" accompanied the helicopter's flight path. An off-road vehicle with desert camouflage paint was housed in this car. Actors including James Farentino and Dana Carvey, as well as former NFL players Bubba Smith and Dick Butkus, star in the show. Following ABC's conclusion that the similarly themed Airwolf on CBS would outperform this show in the ratings, it was abruptly axed. It also ran at the same time as CBS's soap opera Dallas, and lost the ratings battle. Before the show was canceled, eleven episodes had been produced.
