Cape Town, South Africa. Mat Joubert used to be the best police captain in the world, solving all of the crimes and arresting all of the killers. His wife Lara, who was working undercover at the time, had been killed a year before. His mental health has taken a turn for the worse lately, and it's hard to tell exactly what role Mat played in his wife's death. Mat is now a sluggish, out-of-shape, chain-smoking recluse who is unconvinced by the crime-ridden surroundings. Mat's history haunts him, but he's gradually overcoming them. However, he must relive the nightmare of his wife's death in order to put an end to the violence in the cases he is currently handling.
