Gustave Reininger and Chuck Adamson produced the American television drama Crime Story, which premiered on NBC in 1986 and lasted two seasons. Michael Mann served as executive producer and directed the film Manhunter after leaving his previous series Miami Vice. The show debuted with a two-hour pilot— a theatrically released film— that was watched by nearly 30 million people. It was later rescheduled to air on Friday nights after Miami Vice, and it maintained its record-breaking ratings. The show was then relocated to Tuesdays at 10 p.m., opposite ABC's Moonlighting, which resulted in its demise after only two seasons due to low ratings. Torello, his friend Ted Kehoe, and Luca grew up in Chicago's "The Patch" area, which was also known as "Little Sicily" or "Little Italy" and was home to the Forty-Two Gang. The show's serialized style, in which a continuous tale was conveyed across an entire season rather than episodically, as was common at the time, drew both praise and criticism.
