The 17-episode military-western TV show Custer, also called The Legend of Custer, ran on ABC from September 6 to December 27, 1967. Wayne Maunder played Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer in the show. During the American Civil War, Custer rose to become the Union Army's youngest major general. After the war, he was demoted to the rank of Captain because the army was getting smaller. In 1866, he was brought back as a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of the Seventh Cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas. Many of the soldiers in the regiment were slackers, former Confederates, or even criminals. Before the script reached the Little Big Horn River in southeast Montana, where everyone died on June 25, 1876, in a Sioux Indian ambush, the show was canceled. Robert F. Simon played U.S. General Alfred H. Terry, Custer's boss. Terry didn't like Custer's long hair or many of the ways he fought Indians. Slim Pickens played California Joe Milner, a scout. Michael Dante played Crazy Horse, a Sioux chief. Sergeant James Bustard, who had been a Confederate soldier, was played by Peter Palmer. Captain Myles Keogh was played by Grant Woods.
