Dante is a brief-lived NBC adventure/drama television series starring Howard Duff as Willie Dante, a former gambler who owns Dante's Inferno, a nightclub in San Francisco, California. Alan Mowbray played the Maitre d', Tom D'Andrea as Dante's "man Friday," and Mort Mills as police Lieutenant Bob Malone. Dante professes to have moved on from his past, yet he has kept old friends Stewart and Biff. While his club is legal, neither the police nor the mob believe he is genuinely finished with the criminal underground. Dante's former criminal acquaintances continue to appear at the club in an attempt to entice him back into the underworld. Dick Powell had previously played Dante in eight episodes of his Four Star Playhouse, which was originally written by Blake Edwards, who had earlier produced the radio drama Richard Diamond, Private Detective for Powell. Willie runs an illegal gambling business in the "Infernoback "'s room, which authorities quickly shut down. Mowbray was the only regular from the Four Star Playhouse production to be cast in the series as well, having originally played a millionaire named Jackson who had gambled away his wealth and subsequently worked as one of Dante's servers. These episodes were later rerun under the banner The Best in Mystery.
