The American humorous science fiction animated children's television series Dexter's Laboratory was produced by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network. The show is aimed for younger audiences. In the series, the protagonist, Dexter, is a young prodigy who possesses a top-secret laboratory that is stocked with his assortment of inventions. Both his sister Dee Dee and his archrival and neighbor, Mandark, give him a run for his money on a regular basis. His sister Dee Dee manages to sneak in no matter how hard he tries to keep her out. The first two seasons of the show include two more episodes: "Dial M for Monkey," which is about Dexter's pet lab monkey who becomes a superhero, and "The Justice Friends," which is about a group of three superheroes who live together in an apartment. Tartakovsky initially presented the idea for the series to Hanna-World Barbera's Premiere Toons, an animated shorts showcase, basing it on the student films he had produced while he was a student at the California Institute of the Arts. After the success of the four shorts that were produced and shown on Cartoon Network in 1995 and 1996, the network was persuaded by the approval rates of the viewers to order a first season consisting of thirteen episodes, which debuted on April 28, 1996. In 1999, after the production of 52 episodes and a television movie, Tartakovsky decided to go on to his other projects, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. During this time, he abandoned the production of the series. The series was brought back on the air by the network in 2001 under the direction of a new production team at Cartoon Network Studios; it continued for another 26 episodes before coming to a conclusion on November 20, 2003.
