Toshiko Hagitani, a housewife, pays her friend Shigeko Maehata, who is employed at a modest editing company, a visit one day. Toshiko reveals to Shigeko that she believes her son Hitoshi, who is 12 years old, may have the unique capacity to view the memories of other people. She takes a picture that was drawn by Hitoshi out of her bag. In the picture, there is a young woman with a pale complexion who is reclining inside of a home that features a bat-shaped weather vane atop its roof. It would appear that the picture is depicting the incident that involved the Doizaki pair. Shigeko makes the decision to conduct some research, but Hitoshi is tragically killed in an automobile accident. During this time, the attorney representing the Doizaki couple informs the couple's second daughter, Seiko, that the pair has severed all contact with her. During this time period, a female high school student is held in custody.
