Judge Judy is an American reality court show featuring Judith Sheindlin, a retired judge from the Manhattan Family Court. In a simulated courtroom setting, Sheindlin arbitrates actual small claims cases. All parties must sign documents agreeing to arbitrate under the Sheindlin framework. The series is distributed by CBS Television Distribution in first-run syndication. The 1996 launch of Judge Judy is said to have reinvigorated the court show genre. It was preceded by just two previous arbitration-based reality court shows, The People's Court and Jones and Jury. Sheindlin is credited for introducing the "tough" adjudication style into the judicial genre, which has spawned numerous imitations. Sheindlin's tenure as a television arbitrator is the longest, surpassing that of The People's Court and Divorce Court, the two court shows with more seasons than Judge Judy. Both The People's Court and Divorce Court have had multiple production runs and arbitrators, making Sheindlin's tenure as a television arbitrator the longest. By 2011, Judge Judy had been nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards for fourteen straight years without ever winning. However, on June 14, 2013, on its fifteenth nomination for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program, Judge Judy won its first Daytime Emmy. It is the first highly-rated, long-running court show to win an Emmy.
