Paris

From September 29, 1979 until January 15, 1980, CBS aired the American television series Paris. The show, a crime thriller, features James Earl Jones in his first starring role on television and was developed by Steven Bochco, who went on to star in Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. Captain Woody Paris of the Los Angeles Police Department supervised a team of young detectives, and the show focused on his experiences as a leader. Officers Charlie Bogart, Ernesto Villas, and Willie Miller were among the rookie investigators under the command of Sergeant Stacy Erickson. Jerome Bench (Hank Garrett), Paris' supervisor and Lee Chamberlin (Lee Chamberlin), Paris's wife, were featured prominently in the storylines in an unusual turn for police dramas of that era. Paris was also shown to be a part-time criminology lecturer at a nearby university. CBS booked Paris in one of the worst conceivable time slots on a weekly schedule: Saturdays at 10 p.m./9 p.m. Central. Only Hart to Hart on ABC made it past its first 13 weeks of production in the 1979-80 season, when it premiered against the competition on all three networks. No matter how many times it was shifted, CBS couldn't save it. Executive producer Bochco's iconic Hill Street Blues would be premiered on NBC during the following season, thanks to Edward DeBlasio's production for MTM Enterprises.
