Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere created Recess for Walt Disney Television Animation. The story follows six primary school pupils and their classmates and teachers. The title refers to the time of day when North American schoolchildren are outside in the schoolyard. The youngsters build their own society, complete with government and class structure, in a regular school. From 1997 through2001, ABC aired Recess, and Disney Channel aired reruns. The successful series was distributed to several countries, including the UK, where it aired on Toon Disney and Disney Channel UK. Recess: School's Out, the first of two Recess films, was released in 2001. Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street followed the same year.
