An alien spacecraft crashed into Emery's little town when she was 6 years old. Whether they arrived in peace or with more sinister intentions was irrelevant: a ferocious fight broke out as humans fought for dominance over their new adversaries, an alien species known as the Atrians. In the midst of the fighting, Roman, a 6-year-old Atrian kid, made his way to the shed behind Emery's home, where she provided him with food, comfort, and friendship. Ten years later, the Atrians have adapted to life on Earth, but they are segregated from humans in a camp called the Sector, which is closely guarded. Now, for the very first time, a group of Atrian teenagers will enroll in a suburban human high school to test the viability of human/alien integration. Emery and Roman reunite in a school and in a culture that distrusts everything about Atrians. As the world around them rages with animosity and bigotry, their friendship grows stronger and more perilous.
