Vernon Brownmule, or "Burnin' Vernon," is a scandal-ridden, one-hit-wonder who was booted out of country music and became the second-best Elvis impersonation 20 years later. After crashing into a church sign while inebriated, he's jailed and forced to serve as the church's handyman. Along the way, he pretends to be the congregation's new pastor and reconnects with a one-night-stand when he learns he has a 15-year-old daughter.
