The Cowboys was a short-lived Western television series based on John Wayne's 1972 film of the same name. From February 6 through May8,1974, it broadcast on the American Broadcasting Company network. Jim Davis, Diana Douglas, Moses Gunn, A Martinez, Robert Carradine, and Clay O'Brien were among the cast members of the television series. The series was produced by David Dortort, noted for his work on Bonanza and The High Chaparral. Like the film, the television show featured the exploits of seven boys who worked on a ranch in 1870s New Mexico. The Cowboys was originally a one-hour show, but ABC cut it down to a half-hour format. The show was canceled early because of the format change, which did not result in an increase in viewers. In "The Indian Givers," Cal Bellini played Wa-Cha-Ka, Kevin Hagen played Josh Redding in "Death on a Fast Horse," and Lurene Tuttle played Grandma Jesse in "Many a Good Horse Died."
