In The Hathaways, a 26-episode ABC sitcom that ran from October6,1961, to March30,1962, Peggy Cass and Jack Weston played "parents" to a troupe of traveling performers, the chimps, in a suburban LA neighborhood. As Walter Hathaway, a realtor, Weston plays the role. Candy, Charlie, and Enoch are the Marquis Chimps' "mother" and booking agent, Elinore. Cass is his wife Elinore. Prior to their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the chimpanzees had starred in television commercials for CBS in 1960. Mary Grace Canfield played Mrs. Amanda Allison, a servant; Barbara Perry played Elinore's friend and neighbor, Thelma Brockwood; and Harvey Lembeck played Jerry Roper, the theatrical agent of the chimpanzees. Ms. Harrison's mother, Belle Montrose (mother of comedian Steve Allen), portrayed a different neighbor in the role. According to "Love Thy Neighbor" (the debut episode's title), despite their concerns about the chimpanzees living next door, Brockwoods decides to buy the house next door and move in with it. Freddie Winkler was played by Joe Flynn in "Walter Takes a Partner," the third episode of "Friends with Benefits," which aired on October 20. In "Candy's Tonsils," Vaughn Taylor portrayed Dr. Dorsey, a veterinarian. On "TV or Not TV," Robert Q. Lewis played Barney Holt. Elinore's Best Friend was the final episode in the series, which was named The Hathaways Sleep Out, Grandma's Lamp, TV or Not TV, The Shrewd Trader, "A Man for Amanda," and Help Wanted.
