The Ren & Stimpy Show, which is often just called Ren & Stimpy, is an American animated TV show created by Canadian animator John Kricfalusi. On August 11, 1991, the first episode of the show aired on Nickelodeon as part of its Nicktoons block, along with Rugrats and Doug. The show is about the two main characters, Ren Hoek, an emotionally unstable chihuahua, and Stimpson J. Cat, a good-natured but dim-witted cat. The show ran for five years on the network. During and after its run, the show was praised by critics and gained a cult following. Some critics say that it paved the way for satirical animated shows like Beavis and Butthead and South Park and played an important role in television animation. Throughout its run, The Ren & Stimpy Show was controversial because of its crude humor, sexual innuendo, and violence, all of which led to fights between the production staff and Nickelodeon's Standards and Practices department. Ren & Stimpy's "Adult Party Cartoon," a spin-off for adults, aired on Spike in 2003, but it was canceled soon after it started.
