War and Peace
The classic BBC dramatization of Tolstoy's epic story of love and loss set against the background of the Napoleonic Wars. Anthony Hopkins plays Pierre Bezuhov, a role for which he won the Best Actor BAFTA in1972. Morag Hood plays the impulsive and beautiful Natasha Rostova, Alan Dobie plays the serious but brave Andrei Bolkonsky, and David Swift plays Napoleon, whose decision to invade Russia in 1812 has big effects on Pierre and the Rostov and Bolkonsky families. The twenty-part serial was the idea of producer David Conroy, whose main goal was to make a TV drama out of Tolstoy's best book, which has a lot of interesting characters and events. Conroy's War And Peace was written by Jack Pulman and directed by John Davies. It has great acting, a design that won an award (1972 Best Design BAFTA), and stunning battle scenes that were shot in the former Yugoslavia.
