Wild America is a documentary series on public television about North America's wild wildlife and landscapes. Throughout the 1970s, Marty Stouffer had made a number of full-length documentaries that were broadcast on television. At this time, he talked to the programmers at Public Broadcasting Service about making a half-hour wildlife show. It would be the first show to focus solely on the plants and animals of North America. In1982, PBS bought the rights to broadcast Marty Stouffer's show Wild America. The show became one of the most popular on PBS because of its uncompromising presentation of nature and its extensive use of film techniques including slow motion and close-ups. Stouffer made $135,000 per show from PBS. The show was produced between 1982 and 1994. The series is no longer on PBS, but reruns are still shown on commercial television in most of the United States. In1997, Warner Brothers released a full-length movie called Wild America, which was loosely based on the lives of Marty Stouffer and his brothers, Mark and Marshall.
