A Gray State
David Crowley, an Iraq soldier, aspiring filmmaker, and charismatic up-and-coming figure in fringe politics, began filming Gray State in 2010. The film's crowd-funded trailer, set in a dystopian near-future where civil liberties are trampled by an unrestrained federal government, was warmly received by the burgeoning online community of libertarians, Tea Party activists, and members of the nascent alt-right. Crowley was discovered dead in his suburban Minnesota home with his family in January 2015. Their terrible murders rapidly became a cause célèbre for conspiracy theorists, who speculated that Crowley was slain by a clandestine government concerned that the film and filmmaker were getting too near to the truth about their objectives.
