A sensitive French child learns from a neighbor that his family is Jewish in 1953. François Grimbert studies medicine and progressively peels back the layers of his buried family history, which culminated in his difficult upbringing as a Catholic by his "Aryan" parents. His athletic father worked hard to eradicate conventional Jewish features in his son in order to keep the family's numerous secrets hidden, as most relatives fought in World War II and were ultimately taken off to labor and death camps by the Gestapo.
