A Very Long Engagement

Mathilde was 19 in 1919. Manech left for the Somme two years earlier. He was "died in battle" like millions others. The official notice says so in black and white. Mathilde disagrees. If Manech had died, she would know. She clings to her intuition as the final hope binding her to her boyfriend. A former sergeant tells her in vain that Manech died in the no man's land of a trench named Bingo Crepescule, in the company of four other men condemned to die for self-inflicted wounds. Her path ahead is full of obstacles but Mathilde is not frightened. Whoever challenges fate can do anything.
