Despite having received a literary award 15 years ago, Ryota is an unpopular writer in Japan. Ryota is now employed as a private investigator. He is divorced from his ex-wife Kyoko, with whom he has a son, Shingo, who is 11 years old. Yoshiko, his mother, is a solitary resident in her flat. When Ryota and his ex-wife Kyoko arrive at Yoshiko's apartment one day, Shingo is the only one there. A typhoon rolls through, and the family is forced to stay in their home for the entire night.
