Ted Striker, an alcoholic pilot who has developed a fear of flying as a result of wartime trauma, boards a passenger jet in an attempt to woo back his attendant fiancée. Food poisoning kills the passengers and crew, forcing Striker to land the jet with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller and Striker's furious former Air Force commander, both of whom must calm him down.
