Akeelah Anderson's life is not easy. Her father is dead, her mother doesn't care about her, and her brother hangs out with the local gangbangers. She's smart, but her environment makes it hard for her to reach her goals. In response to a threat from her school's principal, Akeelah takes part in a spelling bee to avoid getting detention for her many absences. To her surprise and embarrassment, she wins. Her principal tells her to get help from Dr. Larabee, an English professor, for the more important regional bee. With the possibility of going all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Akeelah could give her community someone to rally around and be proud of, but only if she can get past her insecurities and her distracting home life. She also has to get past Dr. Larabee's demons and a group of other spellers who are more experienced and have more opportunities.
