When German journalist Philip Winter attempts to write an article about the United States, he encounters a case of writer's block. While trying to book a flight back to Germany, he happens to come into a German woman and her nine-year-old daughter Alice, who are also trying to book a flight back. After becoming friends (almost by necessity), the three are asked to look after Alice by her mother. While Winter is initially reluctant to take on the duty, it soon becomes clear that Alice will be in his care for much longer than he anticipated. While traveling through numerous European countries in search of Alice's grandma after returning to the United States, the innocent connection between Winter and Alice blossoms even more.
