Sam, an Afghan and Iraqi veteran, meets Amira when he visits her uncle Bassam, his Iraqi interpreter. Bassam and Sam share a special relationship from their time in the conflict. Amira initially distrusts him since he is an American and her brother was killed by an American bomb during the war. Unbeknownst to Sam, Charlie begs Sam for assistance with illicit hedge funds. Since her father's death, Amira lives with her uncle Bassam. She sells pirated movies on the street but is forced to stay with Sam after being caught. Sam and Amira fall in love in the film.
