Sergeant Süleyman comes across a half-frozen little girl in 1950, amidst the devastation of the Korean War. This little girl, frantic, afraid, and on the edge of death, catches Süleyman's heart, and he risks his own life to save her, smuggling her into his Army post and out of harm's way. Süleyman calls her Ayla in honor of the moon on the fateful night they met, despite not knowing her name and being unable to converse with her. The two create an instant and inseparable friendship, and Ayla, almost easily, offers an eerie delight to the Turkish unit in the grip of war. As the war draws to an end, Süleyman's brigade is informed that they would be coming home. Süleyman cannot handle the thought of abandoning Ayla and does all in his power to take her with him. He is forced to give Ayla to an orphanage after numerous failures, but he never gives up hope of one day reuniting with her. Will the two ever reconcile?
