Benediction
Soldier and poet Siegfried Sassoon(1886–1967), who was awarded for his gallantry on the Western Front and is most recognized for his indignant and empathetic poetry about the First World War that gained him popular and critical fame. In contrast to the emotion and patriotism of many war poets, Sassoon described the horror and cruelty of trench combat and savagely satirized generals, politicians, and churchmen for their incompetence and unquestioning support of the war.
