Best of Enemies

A documentary about a series of nationally televised debates that took place in 1968 between two great public intellectuals, the liberal Gore Vidal and the conservative William F. Buckley Jr., who were both very well known. They were meant to be a commentary on the issues of their time, but they came to define the modern era of public discourse in the media. They marked the big bang moment of our modern media landscape, when spectacle took precedence over content and argument took the backseat to spectacle. It looks into the lives of these two great thinkers and enjoys the language and theater of their debates. It asks, "What has TV done to how we talk about politics in our democracy today?"
