Black Gold

In the 1930s, two leaders who are at war with each other meet on the Arabian Peninsula. The winner, Nesib, the Emir of Hobeika, talks to his rival, Amar, the Sultan of Salmaah, about how they can make peace. The two men agree that neither of them can claim The Yellow Belt, which is an area between them that neither can claim. In exchange, Nesib takes Amar's two boys, Saleeh and Auda, into his family as a way to protect them from invasion. Twelve years have passed, and now Saleeh and Auda are young men. Saleeh, the warrior, can't wait to get out of his golden cage and go back to the land of his father. Auda only cares about books and getting smarter. One day, an American from Texas comes to see Nesib, the man who raised them. He tells the Emir that his land is blessed with oil and that he will have more money than he could ever dream of. Nesib imagines a kingdom with roads, schools, and hospitals that are all paid for by the black gold buried under the desert sand. Only one thing is wrong. The Yellow Belt is where the valuable oil is.
