Lauren Adrian (Jennifer Lopez), a zealous American journalist for the "Chicago Sentinel" who wishes to be posted to the Iraq front lines to chronicle the conflict, desires to be sent there. Instead, her editor, George Morgan (Martin Sheen), assigns her to investigate a series of murders involving young maquiladora plant workers in a border town in Mexico.
