Brian, a charming outcast, lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing bizarre contraptions that rarely work. Brian has an inspiration after discovering a discarded mannequin head. After three days, a washing machine, and various spare parts, he's created Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and makes a charming, cheeky companion. Charles, on the other hand, quickly gains autonomy. Charles is drawn to the wider world— or whatever lies beyond the cottage where Brian has hidden him away.
