During the Cold War, the Soviet Union shoots down U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers' U-2 spy plane and takes him prisoner. Powers was given a 10-year prison sentence, and the only person who can help him get out is New York lawyer James Donovan, who was hired by a CIA agent to negotiate his release. Donovan gets on a plane to Berlin, where he hopes to trade places with the young man in order to get him out of jail. If everything goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel, the spy Donovan defended in court and who was found guilty.
