This movie is about an idealistic young playwright named David Shayne. It is set in New York City in the 1920s. Nick Valenti, a gangster, gives producer Julian Marx the money he needs to finish the project. Nick's girlfriend Olive Neal gets the part of a psychiatrist, but Olive is a bimbo who could never pass for a psychiatrist and is also a terrible actress. David, who ignores his longtime girlfriend Ellen, will be completely won over by Broadway if he agrees to this first compromise. David also has to deal with Warner Purcell, the lead actor, who eats too much, Helen Sinclair, the grand dame, who wants her part to be more exciting, and Cheech, Olive's meddling hitman/bodyguard. At some point, the playwright will have to choose between art and life.
