Two young men are working hard to qualify for the 1924 Olympics in Paris while living in the United Kingdom in the early 1920s, a country that was deeply divided along religious lines and was fascinated with social status. Eric Liddell, a devoted Christian who was born in China to Scottish parents who were serving as missionaries there, considers running to be an act of worship to God and so does not practice or compete on the Sabbath. Harold Abrahams is successful in overcoming anti-Semitism as well as class prejudice; nevertheless, in his dogged pursuit, he fails to prioritize his beloved fiancée.
