Being a teenager is not easy, and Mike, a sixteen-year-old, is particularly challenged. In Faintville, a Canadian timber industry town, he lives in the sticks with his mother, a nonstop nagger. He lacks a father figure, friends, and even a favorite food. In essence, his only desire is to vanish from the face of the world. Mike eventually creates his own obituary and commits suicide. To his dismay, he awakens in the local hospital. The physicians detect a plum-sized tumor in his brain during a regular test. Mike can't believe his good fortune and conceals his illness in order to avoid undergoing life-saving surgery. Looking death in the eyes, on the other hand, changes Mike's perspective, and he reconsiders his feelings for both Miranda, the enchantress and the lunatic. After all, it appears as though someone understands him.
