Sally Hyde (Jane Fonda), the wife of a Marine stationed in Vietnam, decides to volunteer at a local veterans hospital in order to fill her time. Luke Martin (Jon Voight), a wheelchair-bound veteran who has grown disillusioned with the war, introduces her to a group of other former soldiers. When Sally's husband, Bob (Bruce Dern), returns suddenly, she must choose between remaining with him and pursuing her new love.
