Meet the Libners: The eldest, Marvin (Daniel Stern), is a sergeant in the United States Air Force. The middle child, Buddy (Arye Gross), is a shy dreamer. The youngest, Bobby (Patrick Dempsey), is an attractive reform student. They used to fight a lot as kids, and now they hardly talk to each other as adults. Their tough and eccentric father, Fred (Alan Arkin), assigns them a duty in the summer of1963: to transport a 1954 Cadillac purchased for their mother, Betty (Rita Taggart), from Detroit to Miami. While attempting to keep the Caddy in mint condition, the three brothers fight and come to bond with one another as the journey progresses.
