At the turn of the twentieth century, Messina was a thriving port city, known as the "City of Gold." In addition to his violence to children and animals, Peter, the 13-year-old son of a wealthy English family is also well-known for his abuse to staff. One night, he is ambushed and finds himself in a coffin beneath the city's Gothic cemetery, where he has been buried as a punishment for his callousness by a servant boy from his mother's estate. In the aftermath of a huge earthquake that levels Messina, Peter is imprisoned and his whereabouts remain unknown. After a century, an English archaeologist and his daughter finally make their way to the city.
