Lt. Franta Slama is a top Czech Air Force pilot who is tasked with training a talented rookie pilot named Karel Vojtisek, and the two quickly become friends. When Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia in 1939, they both reject their new leaders' authority and flee to England, where they join other Czech exiles in the Royal Air Force (RAF). Karel crashes down on the property of Susan, a young woman whose husband is in the Navy, while flying a mission over England. Karel quickly falls head over with for Susan, but after a brief romance, Susan decides she prefers the company of Franta, who is older and more worldly. In the midst of their romantic rivalry, Franta and Karel try to keep their friendship.
