History goes beyond what is written. Residents of Mobile, Alabama's Africatown have been telling stories about where they came from for many years. Their community was started by people whose ancestors were taken as slaves on the illegal slave ship Clotilda in 1860. Even though the ship was destroyed on purpose when it got there, its memory and legacy lived on.
