Double Suicide of Sonezaki

In Japan, suicide has been used as a way to protest society for a long time. In this movie, which takes place in1703, a new merchant class is making changes to samurai culture. Some parts of the social contract are starting to fall apart, and some shady people took advantage of this before the social order was put back together. In this story, a rich merchant gives his worker an I.O.U. instead of money. When the poor clerk gives the paper to the merchant at the agreed-upon time and asks for payment, the merchant gets angry, pretends he didn't write it, and says the clerk is trying to rip him off. Then he sends his goons to beat up the clerk.
